Students for ACE!

🌪 Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

Understanding the Impact. Breaking the Cycle.

What Are ACEs?

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years). These include:

Abuse – physical, emotional, or sexual

Neglect – physical or emotional

Household Challenges – such as:

Witnessing domestic violence

Living with a family member with mental illness or substance use

Parental separation or incarceration

---

🧠 How Do ACEs Affect Children and Adults?

Physical & Mental Health Risks:

Chronic diseases (e.g., heart disease, diabetes)

Depression, anxiety, and PTSD

Increased risk of suicide

Substance use disorders

Risky behaviors (e.g., unprotected sex, smoking, drinking)

Social & Developmental Effects:

Poor academic performance

Difficulty forming relationships

Behavioral issues

Higher likelihood of incarceration or homelessness

---

📊 The ACE Score

Each ACE adds one point to a person’s ACE score.

Higher scores = higher risk for health and social problems later in life.

0–1 ACEs: Lower risk

4+ ACEs: Significantly increased health and life challenges

---

💡 Prevention & Healing

We can break the cycle of trauma by:

Building safe, stable, and nurturing relationships

Supporting trauma-informed care in schools and healthcare

Providing counseling and community support

Encouraging early intervention and mental health access

Educating families and caregivers

---

💬 Quote for Awareness

"Children who experience ACEs aren't broken. They're survivors. What they need is understanding, not judgment."
